04 - New Plan
Inkmonkey on July 20, 2006
A concept I've been preaching about Sprite comics of late has been the need to keep the page layout interesting. Since camera angles, closeups, and a few other concepts are almost completely out of the question in this medium, I need to do something to keep the page interesting to look at. There's an excusing for adhering to the traditional 4-panel layout on paper (time restrictions and what have you), but it literally takes me next to no extra effort to create panels of varying size on the computer (it just takes a bit more planning beforehand so I can lay it out properly).

That's kinda how I work... try to make it look good to enhance the writing/story/joke... I remember the time that I had actually planned to keep two-toned backgrounds on my comic *shudder* and then realized that no matter how funny things were... it didn't LOOK all that interesting o.o

While I agree that poor art can be compensated, to a degree, by great writing, or that great art doesn't help bad writing, I don't think the importance of art, in and of itself, should ever be downplayed. That's one of the things I'm struggling with in this comic; it's very hard to make the art in this look good with the limitations, but I don't want to just say "screw it" and pretend that the writing is good enough to let me just put it all together half-assed.

@Xion350: That's the best way of thinking about all comics in my opinion ^_^

Nice plan. I should try that in later sprite comics...

Heh, The Humor is similar to all your comics Ink. Just in a sprite format. Its not the art that makes the comic, Its the Humor/Story.

It seems that they don't have very good grasps on what happens in these situations....like dying...

Don't worry, Xer; the quest to get a 1-up isn't over. This particular time I just thought it would be funnier the way it is above; the straightforward approach (actually following the characters each step of their journey) would be a bit dry and predictable. As for the author's notes thing: yes, I'm referring to adhering to a specific panel layout each day, not just doing less work.

One more thing, forgot to mention your author comments. :p I don't see any excuse for anyone to cut down on panels for any reason, so I truly don't know why you mention it. None of us on Drunk Duck are bound by deadlines. Unless you're referring to the fact that most people use a panel limit out of habit. Then I agree with you. That's a bad habit. My apologies if I come off a bit miffed. Just a bit dissappointed no one else seemed to actually give you a comment beyond a single sentence.

LowResAtari told me about this, so I thought I'd check it out. I hear you don't update this very much, or even what you plan to get out of this experiment, but I'll just treat it like every other comic. and say exactly what I think. I didn't really like how you just cut to the end result of this plan. You could've made countless strips just about this plan Red had. Brainstorming with the other guys, designing it, building it, and actually showing it in action would've been infinitely more interesting to see. Oh, and Red is easily the most interesting out of the bunch, in my opinion. Overall, a nice job mate. Decent comic here.
