Romance. Love. L'amour.
Ozone and I keep talking about getting the community engaged with our Quackcast topics - The ‘Casts that feature those community posts are always my favourite episodes by far! So we put these questions to our community to see how they'd respond:
How do you approach love, romance and relationships in your comics? Do you find it difficult to write this stuff? Is it easy? What do you like to see, love and relationship-wise, in the comics you read? Do you like it realistic? Angsty? Or do you like it more fantasy-based? What do you NOT like to see? What are some of the fictional couples/relationships you really like? Were there any you thought didn't work at all? Why?
The replies were interesting, engaging, and enlightening. So join us! All aboard for the LurrrrvCast!

Yeah me too. My dad loves romantic comedies. I loathe them. Just as in life, it's a fine subplot, but I need something more interesting and less uncomfortable than awkward misunderstandings and relationship chasing.

I guess, ultimately, I just don't like romance as it's own genre. I don't mind having romantic stuff in what I write, but I couldn't write a 'romance' -- does that make sense? It's all in what's emphasized. In real life, I find people that spend the majority of their time and energy in romantic endeavors very shallow and, frankly, boring. I guess I look at stories the same way. Have love in your life, but not be your life!

Me too, Neilsama. I hate "love stories" so much. But when you write something long enough, relationships will naturally develop between some characters. Never good to make a story forced or contrived. As long as interactions are natural, they can work out. It is a balancing act because relationships can throw off character dynamics and screw with plot development -- but they can help things too. I've actually been rescued from my writer's block several times by stepping away for a bit and then realizing that Character X should be there too because Character Y would want him there. Things tend to fall into place when you understand your characters and work with how they would behave rather than contrive plot devices to keep them out of certain arcs or prevent romantic interactions.

I generally stayed away from romance as much as I could early on. I do have a relationship in the comic, but as it steadily came out more and more, I treated it as two people who are close friends who who touch each other a lot. And periodically, they have sex. I try not to over-think it more than that, for fear that it could become angsty and contrived. I'm afraid of it turning into some weird harlequin novel romance where everything is full of passion and the lovers can't bear to be apart. That would be so corny. That said, I kinda want to do a more romance-driven story. We'll see how that goes. I want to be as careful as possible.

Awesome! With something like that you totally need sequels! And it doesn't matter if they're crap and cheap because that perfectly fits with the style.

The kickstarter was successful, so the 30 mins version is definitely going to be made! :)

I SO hope that movie gets made, and becomes a game too. A crappy sidescroller!

Oh. My. Goodness. The Kung Fury trailer reminded me of every late night arcade outing I had in college and a culmination of everything good from the 1980s.

Ozoneocean at 12:49AM, Feb. 4, 2014

LOL! Funny you should say that Kawaii! Banes and I were both watching the trailer for "KUNG FURY" before the quackcast!

Wow, that banner is just incredible. I feel like it is missing a midi soundtrack and a 90s Street Fighter battle where retro Ron Jeremy is the final boss.
