What does it take to get your comic featured?

So you'd like to have your comic featured on the front page of the site here?
What does it take? Interesting question… Let me answer that for you. :)
The criteria is pretty straight forward:

1. The comic needs to have at least 15 pages.
The reason for this is that there's no point directing people to a comic if there's nothing there to read. And we need to read at least 15 pages to gauge whether a comic is worthy of a feature.

2. The comic must NOT be Adult rated.
This is because people not logged into the site wouldn't be able to read it. Also, we want to make our features at least a little bit friendly to readers of all ages… That said, sometimes featured comics will have some violence and even some nudity. As long as it's not overwhelming or non-sexual then it might be ok. It's up to the personal judgement of the administrator who does the feature.

3. The comic must have updated recently and be regularly updating.
This is so readers directed toward the comic have the expectation of lots of future updates and basically something they can read along with as the author posts more of it. It's also a reward for an author who's participating with the site.
If you have a huge archive of comics and you want to come and mirror them here and hopefully get a new audience and maybe a feature, NONE of that will EVER happen if all you do is upload your entire archive and never come back. Your best bet is to use the queuing feature to delay your updates. That way you can have comics updating regularly for weeks and weeks. This has the added benefit of putting your comic on the front page in the “recently updated” list regularly, as well as being in the running for the top ten ranking- which it can't be if it never updates.

4. It has to be good. Either in writing, art, or both.
Good art makes it easier to notice a comic though, so we are a little more biased towards that aspect. Unique and interesting work can also be featured, especially if the style is very individual. We definitely do not go for any particular style or type of comic.

5. It has to be your OWN work.
Do not post someone else's comic. We also can't feature sprite comics or fan comics because the art is copyright to someone else.

6. It has to catch the notice of one of the featuring admins.
The best way you can do this is to update your comic regularly, that way it will show up on the front page where we can see it. Have a great looking comic thumbnail image, that will help is notice it! Comment on Quackcasts and newsposts, comment in the forums… All that will raise your profile to us.
Please do not contact us directly and ask to be featured. Features are supposed to be a surprise and a reward, not something you deserve or request. However, if ANOTHER regular DD member were to recommend it to us then we would consider it.

What does featuring give you?
Well you get a nice feature review by a person who has carefully read your work. You get advertised on the front page of our website for some time and a place in our featured archive forever. You also get your comic promoted on our facebook page and talked out in our Quackcast podcast as well! So it's a pretty good thing :)

There are multiple examples of familiar creators who have done multiple comics and been featured each time. I may not be too talented or intelligent but I'm not blind.

Ozone, sorry that excuse doesn't wash. Nice try. I may have been born at night, but I wasn't born LAST night.

I think Oz meant the pun was that Genejoke added a whole new dimension, the THIRD dimension!

DJMulcahy at 2:09PM, June 25, 2017

Why wouldn't someone appreciate 3D work? :'(

Ozoneocean at 1:15AM, June 24, 2017

Pardon the pun...

Ozoneocean at 1:15AM, June 24, 2017

What we really need with features is a few more people on board so we can have a greater variety of tastes and styles represented. Kawaii and I have a broad taste but adding Genejoke added a whole new dimension! Finally someone who really appreciates 3D work!

No, comics can't be featured twice, haha, it's built into the programming. But it STILL happens by accident for various reasons, usually when a comic is deleted and re-uploads under a new name, that's a nightmare... There was a comic that I almost re-featured of 3 separate occasions, each time it was different in some way and I didn't recognise it!

Ozoneocean at 1:11AM, June 24, 2017

Ah Bravo... I forgot to mention "familiarity". For the work of people we see pretty often and for people who we get very used to we often automatically assume they've already been featured and so we continually overlook them. There needs to be a review of "The greatest ongoing comics on DD that have never been featured". Someone needs to do that! Not me, I have no time :(

phinmagic at 8:38PM, June 23, 2017

I was featured many years back. It was cool. Can you be featured, twice?

bravo1102 at 8:03PM, June 23, 2017

My absolute garbage first comic was featured ten years ago just in time for me to run out of updates and it sputtered to an end. Since then five complete comics that regularly updated during their runs. Nearly 1000 pages of archives between them. Nominations and award banners and quality creators liking my stuff. Any creator would wonder about what was missing from their work and what were they doing wrong. I look back in amazement at what I've churned out over the years. I wonder at how far I have come and can gaze ahead at how far there still is to go. I can want more recognition, but I know it still wouldn't be enough to satisfy my own self-doubt. :)

I think there could actually be something to that "Feature Curse." Too much success too soon, maybe?

Avart at 6:16PM, June 23, 2017

Nice tips. I think it's better to continue making and updating your comic without thinking about being featured, this way you'll not be frustrated waiting for it.

bravo1102 at 4:37PM, June 23, 2017

You forgot #7. NOT be by Bravo. Oh right #4, the comic actually has to be GOOD. Seven regular updating comics that keep getting recognized at DD award time, makes you wonder...

One day...

Tantz_Aerine at 11:51AM, June 23, 2017

Admit it, in order to get featured, each comic maker must make a pact with you signed in blood.

Ironscarf at 9:15AM, June 23, 2017

I suspect they thought being featured would catapult them to stardom and untold riches and when that didn't happen, they stormed off in a right old strop.

Ozoneocean at 8:54AM, June 23, 2017

Cant do anything about the comics that stop updating... That's a lottery. Skoolmunkee and I used to call it "the feature curse"... it happened quite a lot, hahah, always has.

Mika_yi at 8:47AM, June 23, 2017

I don't know nothing about feature other then it can't be adult and has to update regularly. I don't think I ever bothered about ever being featured up here because I have three comics and I cannot update like I want due to lack of time and depression so it's sometimes hard for me even to draw at that point. But people who have it know the feeling. And let's face it two are under adult. lol although if you're looking for sex in it constantly it won't be found. But it appears so I can't put it elsewise. But that's beside the point, I noticed that as well, it sad that some of the feature comics do just stop updating, or like stringer9 said go elsewhere. I remember going through to look for things to read lots of them stop updating. I need to look in the forum to see if there are maybe hidden gems.

stinger9 at 7:09AM, June 23, 2017

Oh, the page count was lowered? Was always curious about why some features were below what I thought the minimum page count was! Kind of sad that there are a couple of featured comics I can think of that ended up going against that third guideline, it always bothered me when a comic is featured, then just immediately ditches the site to go elsewhere.
