The trouble with giving secondary characters relationships is that you do have to acknowledge their partners from time to time and this page felt busy enough as it was with Sarah, Lucy and Geraldine without feeling a desire to include Sasha too so the poor girl barely makes one panel and with no lines. Originally I made no reference to her at all and becky asked if it was Nikki so I realised I at least ought to give some clue to who the stranger is!
....but in your particular case,SKy', the COMMENT response is so large and interactive on the mallard, that the actual stats are not so important - if _I_ had 4-5 regular commenters here, I'd be as happy as the proverbial Larry B-\
MGH: Fury is a really nice place and again it does have that invaluable stats monitor which to me is an essential tool for any comic so I'm really disappointed the Duck has never seen fit to get one going here again. It maybe vague and unreliable anyway but nothing inpires a comic to keep going more than at least being able to have some idea how big your readership is. When I see comics on here with only a single comment or even none at all I can see how frustrating it must be for the makers because you have no other way of knowing what your readership is.
MGH: Unfortunately the guy who Ricky was based on guessed it when he read the first few pages of the story but in all honesty it was really just down to the art only as I was trying to draw characters that looked noticebaly different to each other. So I drew one guy who had a round face with glasses and the other who had a longish face and very short blond hair. The personality isn't really his at all although he was always very outgoing and confident.
Barry: Yea, I've always changed people's names because some of the stuff would certainly have got a big 'NO!' lol It's also more their character that's important rather than what they did or didn't do. I'd hate to feel confined to actual truth all the time i.e as in Stacey's storyline as their version of events may well be lies anyway even if they did agree!
Bear: Thanks a lot, I'll branch out there, too! :) It's funny, because I am also building my own wbesite, but it looks like it's always best to have your sutff a bit all over the place... I'll go have a look at your comics there, at least you'll get some stats :)
MGH can't think of a reason NOT to recommend it. Just one more place to have your stuff seen ! B-) ...and at least I know it IS seen, as they have nice stats (even if mine are low) to look at, like Duckie _used_ to! I can't even remember how I found it ! I only knew about SJ, 'cause Sky' said she was on there. I got on, then forgot my password ( but then I alwasy do that! B-) )
skyangel & BearinOZ: I started reading webcomics on The Duck (back when it was called "The Drunk Duck"), but when it was time for me to put up my own comics, I went straight for SJ, because The Duck was down and broken so often, it was ridiculous. I never stopped following SS, but I did lose track of many other comics on The Duck because of that debacle. It looks much more stable than it was a couple of years ago, so now I am uploading my comics here, too.
But I never heard about Fury! I'm having a look at it now, would you recommend it at all?
skyangel: OK, it's good to know that Lucy is really just an innocent girl asking questions...
About Ricky's brother and your friend's brother, I guess I also would not have liked much that very specific character to be based upon myself hahaha H's quite a douche bag. This is why I never speak of who serves as an inspiration to my comics :D
It's tricky using the experiences of people you know. Some time ago I started an autobiographical comic. Before I involved any of my friends, I asked their permission. Very few of them wanted to be portrayed, so I left them all out. That didn't leave me with a lot of interesting material (LOL).
I did nothing really, just say where you were, after I saw newer comments . I never regretted going to "Fury" when the duck died, although it's a littel more, um adult here ....but with no stats on Duckie and NO comments on my pages, it's a little deflating putting stuff up here still - but I do, from time to time and it's been daily (and continues to be) for a while, it's so far behind!....SJ I found slightly more complicated, so I backed off it. Maybe I'll go look again.
Kim: Yea you guys get me worried sometimes as I start wondering what's going on with my characters too!lol I think you sum up Lucy very nicely in every line. None of my characters are ever perfect and that's because nobody ever really is but I've tried to make Lucy as nice as possible in attitude at least which is one of trying to get on with everyone and understand their point of view while never having any bad feeling towards any one either. It's nice to hear you all speak freely about your personal opinions etc because it gives me food for thought in my writing. In Lucy's case you are right in tune with my own at the moment which is nice.
MGH: Hiii You caught me! lol Your perspective on Lucy interested me a great deal, as did Kim's response too. My own view in writing is that Lucy is an innoccent who kind of feels for everyone and isn't out to stir up trouble or influence anyone in any way. My main aim with this page was just really to bring Stacey back into the picture a bit again as we've heard nothing from her for a long while but while writing the script I realised how weird this whole series of events involving Stacey must look to someone new, so was really toying with that more than anything. As to your question just now, yea funnily enough I told the guy who I based Janey's brother Ricky on and he wasn't too impressed with the way I'd portrayed him so I pointed out it was more of an inspiration than a direct representation. He brought it up again twice more in the space of about 3 years and stil seemed bothered so I decided it was best not to mention to anyone else!
Bear: lol I'm not sure what you've done yet, so I'll have to check that out. Really though I felt my presence on Fury was pretty pointless as the comic is up here and SJ as it is. I started on Fury when the Duck went down a couple of years ago for a long while and realised I should have had a backup site. But then I found SJ had come on really well and the best site for comic management and readership stats so switched to that instead. But then the dear old Duck finally sorted itself out and it felt really nice to be home again so I rather regretted starting on Fury at all.
skyangel: did you ever get any negative reaction from people you know who (accidentally or not) identified themselves in one of your characters? And whenever you take inspiration from a person to create a character, do you ever tell them you "used" them for your comic/s?
Wow, you guys have been busy!! I'm wondering where to start! lol
Tommym: Firstly Sarah will introduce Lucy to Stacy soon, I just have to write the script for that. As for the connection to reality, I started out with real people in mind for all the characters but as time has passed the characters have tended to change, mostly due to the stuff they have been through, so Stacey has mellowed a great deal wheras Sarah has become much harder I feel. I always try to relate everything that happens in the story to something I've experienced personally, or heard or read about from another. The net is an invaluable tool for sourcing true experiences too so I tend to absorb what interests me most and then lay it down in my own way. So it's a very muddled reality now for sure! :)
Dark' / Tommym Yeah, we know it's at least semi-autobiographical. I WAS just kidding about real people ! ...and I know a lot of us DO care about these characters. I know I care about those in my own stories ! B-)
MGH: not saying you have to like Lucy, some people still don't like Stacey, and some even have turned to not liking Janey. The sign of a good story teller is that you feel for the characters, even if it's a negative, because it helps make them feel more 'real', POO
Dear Sky, Some years ago I wrote Sky saying I thought Simply Sarah was based on real persons and in fact may be partly auto-biographical. Sky responded by saying yes, it was based on real people. Correct me if I am wrong. tommym
Sorry! Want me to pretend I don't see a few Red Flags with Lucy? But I'm on Lucy's side! I still like her and attribute some of her behavior to just clueless blathering (which I find endearing to a large degree). Sarah better pursue this :D... I just think a degree of caution is in order... Hey Sky, we're talking about your characters as real persons - you should be proud!!
We are being bitchy, people ! Lucy is with a group if people who have a common history, which she is not a part of (yet). She is naturally curious, hearing their discussion. I know I would be ! "Nosy prodding" is when it's none of your business. Polite inquiry is different. B-)
