The crystal mounted to the floor was a dirty trick. Dragons have a wry sense of humor.
If you look at this page You will see a little sparkly thing by Ronson's foot as he's trying to loose the crystal. As he speaks, the sparkly thing becomes the Mallet.
It really is consistent. Honest.
*sigh*
Xellas, you are wrong. Just because RONSON *assumed* it was the morphing crystal, it obviously wasn't.
Try reading it again. The next page, what Bokkonenen says, what the dragons say, for gosh sake! Other people got it. ;)
Well then, he may want to go back and edit the old art to reflect that, because it sure as heck doesn't SHOW that it's the morphing crystal, because we clearly see it disappear under a pile of gold.
Darned creators and their inconsistent arguments.
Thanks lzaikoski for the elemental court clear up ... it's true, I omitted them for reasons of clarity in the comic. I didn't want there to be too many levels of heirarchy in the comic, so the planet has a consciousness ... much like Gaia is the consciousness of Earth (according to some mythological interpretations).
The crystal Ronson thought was the morphing crystal (the one anchored to the floor) was not. The morphing crystal was attracted to Ronson because he was a god and desired something. Once it became the object Ronson desired it got "stuck" in that form.
We can talk about Satan, gods and if and how they die at a later date ... if I haven't cleared that up in the next few issues. :)
I note Satan is bleeding, I don't think we've ever seen a god to that before.
You know despite the Kids Censoring connection I think if Satan is indeed no more that destroyed would be a better workd in this context as dead indicates a physical termination but not a spiritual one. If, as some assume, that Satan is not only physically harmed but killed and that his spirit, if he even has one, is also terminated then dead doesn't really cover the full scope here.
It's so cool to see so many comments! Chuck is a little under the weather from his travels so I'm not sure if he's looking in on the pages yet.
But I'll try answering some stuff without spoiling.
Yes, the Mallet IS The Morphing Crystal. Or rather, WAS the morphing crystal. It's now a deceptively non-threatening looking rubber mallet. ;)
I'm not exactly sure why there is controversy regarding the word "Satan" as a proper name, because I'm not reading it like that.
lzaikoski is right. Listen to him. :)
@Xellas The Mallet is the Morphing Crystal. While it is true that we see the Mallet appear while he is trying to remove a crystal from the floor of the cave Chuck and SpANG have both stated that the Mallet is indeed the Morphing Crystal. The crystal that was sent into the pile of gold was just some crystal, maybe even a decoy (I think Chuck said something like that in a past posting).
SpANG has already stated that the Mallet is the Morphing Crystal in this very thread, and he is the creatorââ¬â¢s brother! Now, can we please put this silly notion of the Mallet != (not equal) Morphing Crystal to rest for good?
1) Who says the little demon is right? Hell, we've had no indication so far that he's anything but absolutely and utterly incompetent.
2) The mallet isn't the morphing crystal. If you go all the way back to the first storyline where Ronson gets the mallet, he wished for the mallet in order to knock the morphing crystal out of it's spot on the ground. The mallet forms out of thin air, then he smacks the crystal and it zooms under a huge pile of gold, and is presumably still there. The adventurers only ASSUME that the mallet is the morphing crystal, and he goes along with them since he didn't know he was a god at the time.
http://www.rmcomics.com/Mirror/Volume0/?viewDate=20010108
Notice, you see both the mallet AND the crystal in fourth panel. Now, can we please put this silly notion of Mallet = Morphing Crystal to rest for good?
3) Satan isn't one of the 'gods in exile'. If you remember correctly, Inti said that all the gods EXCEPT the Judeo-christian pair were exiled. Somehow they did their jobs wrong and Earth rejected them, but it's implied that God/Satan weren't rejected. So it's probably not accurate to give Satan 'fallen' status.
Actually, both Hebrew and Arab are part of the same language family, semitic, along with Berber and several languages in Ethiopia. Satan/Shaitan are the mutual words for the enemy, and as they are both Abrahamic religions, the difference is kind of moot. It would be like whether or not the Americans or the English invented the tank, if America invents every single part of it, and the English put it together as a tank for the first time, then does it really matter? Especially when they both use both tractors and tanks? Nope.
Could it be possible that Satan was not a god so much as a guardian spirit like Erawan? It would explain why Satan hasn't really used any godly abilities, other than a cellphone, and has generally avoided any direct contact with gods.
The demon does imply Satan's godhood by saying he can't lie to him, but that might be part of the rules demons follow (ie. Don't lie to gods. (Or Satan)). Of course, its also possible that the demons can't lie to him because they *think* he's a god.
There's also the possibility that Satan managed to weaken himself to gods like Death did by bending himself into a form that was more effective against mortals.
To Alves RE:"@SpANG: is Arr-Keelan no more a creation of the Elemental Court then?"
I'm not SpANG or Chuck, but I did create Arr-Kelaan (the world). I know that Chuck did away with the Elemental Court for the purposes of his webcomic because they muddy the literary waters, so to speak.
In the campaign setting version, the EC literally built the world but needed the Travellers to intervene for them as they couldn't really relate to "normal" mortals at all and were very confused and saddened by the things that mortals were doing to one another.
Chuck basically replaced them as actual personalities with Arr-Kelaan as a sort "planetary entity" -- this is primarily seen through Sephin (the Oracle) who "hears" Arr-Kelaan.
If I've gotten anything wrong, I'm sure Chuck or SpANG will correct me! :)
Congrats on #6!!
I dont think the mallet is any kind of crystal at all. But rather an extension of roson's will or essence. I think there was a bit of foreshadowing with the bit about Athena wondering if Mjollinar would be destroyed if thor would have used it to destroy the mallet. Ronson's mallet is probably the same as Thor's hammer and it may be able to kill gods since it could very well be made of "God". Then again, the "you dont kill gods with swords!" thing may extend to mallets. BTW, the morphing crystal is prolly still under that pile of gold in the begining.
Come on, guys, don't get SO die-hard on religion :P Not on a fictional setting, at least. If Inti and Athena are actually god why can't Satan be a god too?
About the mallet...
True, there is no clear history on the morphing crystal. But song crystals were related to the ascension of the Traveller gods and to the moons (and then to the magic) of Arr-keelan... and to the new Traveller shape too: i mean, I'm only guessing but it IMVHO does make sense that what humans called "morphing crystal" could actually be a Song one.
@SpANG: is Arr-Keelan no more a creation of the Elemental Court then?

Mounting a (non)morphing crystal on the floor is the draconic equivalent of cluing a dollar to the pavement?
