Here's the photo I used for my avatar.

His name is Boy. ; )

I can't decide it's really cool or really creepy….
Love the touch of color though.
I'm personally going with the “really cool”.

The washed coloring gives it a very dream like quality and the positioning of the shot itself is actually quite excellent. Where the two “connect” in the photo is rather centered on the contours of both faces, and the limited view of the features on both give that “lucid dreaming” effect

Haha, yeah, it's called Uncanny Valley.

Basically Uncanny Valley is a hypothesis concerning the emotional response of humans to non-human entities. The more human like in the items appearance and motion, the emotional response from a human being to the item will become increasingly positive and empathic, until a point is reached beyond which the response quickly becomes that of strong repulsion. However, as the appearance and motion continue to become less distinguishable from a human being, the emotional response becomes positive once more and approaches human-to-human empathy levels.

This area of repulsive response aroused by a robot or other non-human entity with appearance and motion between a “barely-human” and “fully human” entity is called the uncanny valley. The name captures the idea that a robot or non-human entity which is “almost human” will seem overly “strange” to a human being and thus will fail to evoke the empathetic response required for productive human-robot interaction.

Personally, I'm not as affected by this theory, as I can separate the two. Old dolls used to scare the piss out of me, but now only specific ones do and there's usually some really bad/paranormal mojo associated with it.

Thanks, I think that picture's pretty nifty, too. : ) And actually, I really love having my mannequin around. He's propped against the closet next to one of my windows in good place, considering his shadow is visible from the parking lot (I'm on the first floor of an apartment building) and he's facing out. Sounds strange, but I feel more comfortable when he's there than not. Like my room guard or something.

He's also a great conversational piece at group gatherings, though I suppose I can get away with bringing an inanimate date a little more with the sorts of friends I have.

Here's something a little less vague:

Okay.

Behold: high contrast so as to make the nose vanish makes even bearded dudes look pretty. Also, the grain filter is totally awesome.

damn. that sucks. maybe if you got one of those 50 gallon drums and put it in your room and filled it with papers and wood and lit it on fire you could warm up. i couldn't live through a cold buffalo winter without the heat on at least 70.
