The Superhero movie cast last week was popular, I wanted to chat to Tantz about different types of superheroes. We all know that the same kinds of superheroes seem to popup and reoccur in multiple forms all the time, even within the same worlds, i.e god-like superheroes like Superman, Captain Marvel, Omni-man, Homelander, or Magical types like Doctor Strange, Zatana etc. It was a fun chat about all the categories and subcategories we could think about!

There are so many heroes that fit in multiple groups and of course there are way more categories than either Tantz or I could think of. Here are the ones we thought of; God types (i.e Superman), Speedsters (Flash), Magical devices (Shazam), Supernatural (Ghost Rider), Humans who use tech (Batman), Magic users (Dr Strange), Mutants (Wolverine), Angels (actual angels as superheroes), plot-armourerd human contextual heroes (Judge Dredd), Heroes enhanced with tech (Spiderman), Disabled heroes (Oracle), Strength types (Hulk), Heroes WITHOUT secret identities (not that many), Gritty (The Punisher), Guns (The Punisher), Military (Tankgirl), Rich people (Ironman), Immortals (Wolverine), and so on!

Tantz and I are both pretty ignorant though. If you know more please say! It's not the categories that are the interesting part though, it's how many heroes basically fill the same roles. Like, how many Superman style “god” types are there for example?

This week Gunwallace has given us a theme to Shadow Born - Low sun glinting through gaps in the slow moving silhouette of a freight train shuffling past into the clitterly clattery distance, losing itself in evening twilight shadows as day sinks away to night… This is a soundscape of shadow, winter and darkness, rendered with atmospheric, rhythmic, layered synth sounds.

@CDMallcolm - you've gone about the process a bit of a different way I think. It's a sort of an in-universe catagorisation, they're sorted from the point of view of people in that universe. That's an interesting way of doing it and makes a lot of sense for your story.

My characters SolarCell is a construct of the sin Gluttory who at first learn to become a super villain. Not a golem type. More like how god created life from Adam’s rib. She would later on become a superhero due to memory loss. My other character DarkBeauty was a human turned immortal by the Gods to pretty much stop the Villain version of SolarCell. I more or less use these category as a type of hero or villain types. Supernatural, Aliens, multi-dimension creatures, standard life types, meta types or mutants, and gods and deities. With that said. Things like Magic, Technology or power/energy source could exist under all this categories in one form or another.

Ooooh, Monsters! That's a great idea for a Matrix too Marcorossi! ANd you guys are right about Martial arts, Aliens and cavegirls... Maybe "primitives"? That way we can include Conan and red Sonja. Martial arts would be nice and broad, Batman would be in it too :D

The Hulk and The Thing belong in a 'Monster' category of their own I'd say, along with the later Swamp Thing, Man Thing and no doubt others I can't think of now. Timely comics were doing well with monsters back in the fifties, but carrying the monsters over to Marvel (complete with cold war atomic origins) and turning them into heroes was a novel approach for the time that helped save the company.

I propose the superhero matrix: there are 4 parameters, POWER SOURCE -> supernatural, biologic (seperman, hulk, spiderman), tech (batman, ironman, includes martial arts). POWER LEVEL -> just above human, strong, god-level. ALIGNMENT -> upright (superman, Cap), gritty (Batman, punisher), friendly (spiderman), villain. POWER STYLE (can pick more than one) -> attack, support, sneaky, weird. For a total of more than 120 combinations!

Except for the martial artists the list looks pretty complete... Do jungle girls (Rulah, Sheena, Cave Girl etc.) and similar wood dwellers count as superheroes? Do they need a nature lover category of their own or would they belong to the plot-armoured human contextual heroes? / Would inept parody heroes count that need the villain to mop the floor with them several times before they can really "get dangerous" (Darkwing Duck)? But then Darkwing could easily fit into some of the other categories and the required floor-mopping could be seen as part of the classic five-element plot structure... Categories are a fickle thing!

You missed out; the martial artists(like the ninja turtles, Elektra...), and then the aliens(like Superman, Invincible, martian man hunter)
