Episode 733 - Watch again: Rediscovering

Watching, reading, and listening to things a second, third or even a million times can offer you a whole new experience. Why do we pick up the same thing to enjoy again? It could be nostalgia, it could be the need for comfort in the familiar, maybe it's research, or maybe you're rewatching the early episodes of a series so you can get more enjoyment out of new, later episodes that you haven't seen before?

Whatever the reason it can be an interesting experience, especially when you notice a whole bunch of things you never thought about before! You can see it though new eyes. And because you know how things ended up you can focus more on details, aesthetics, and character development rather than mainly on the plot.
Since I've got lots of streaming services now I've rewatching heaps of faves. I haven't seen the later seasons of Archer so I'm rewatching that right now. It's my 3rd time on these early episodes right now and I'm noticing new things as well as seeing things in a new light. Like I noticed Jessica Walter (Mallory Archer), Jeffrey Tambor (Len Trexlor), Judy Greer (Cheryl Tunt), were all in Arrested Development together. I had previously believed that Archer was an irredeemable arsehole from the get-go, and all the other characters were basically good but became arseholes as a reaction to Archer, but a rewatch shows that they were always ALL aresholes exactly as bad as him! I'm also shocked by how brutal and violent the show is and how often they don't even fully resole endings.
When you revisit things often they're not how you remember them. Usually that's just because your memory is faulty and you have an interesting experience seeing something how it REALLY is. But it's awful when things actually HAVE changed; an old fave that's been retconned and edited… witness the stupid stormtroopers riding badly animated dinosaurs in Starwars!
In comics like Asterix you can drink in the art and the historical and political references, find yourself noticing little side stories in panels and all sorts of character relationships going on. What are your fave things to revisit? And why do you do it? Or maybe you never revisit things?

This Quackcast was inspired by the fan reaction to Game of Thrones, a series that I haven't watched but Tantz and Banes have! Specifically it's about poorly written endings and gas-lighting fans rather than admitting to faults.
Episode 425 - Pay-off or rip-off?

In this Quackcast we chat about set-ups. pay-offs, and rip-offs. To make your climaxes and endings more satisfying you have pay-offs for audience expectations: set them up in the story and pay them off at the end. If you fail to pay-off then you get a rip-off, it's pretty simple. Your audience will be really disappointed. That's not to say disappointing and unsatisfying ends to stories are wrong, not at all! Often those are fully intended. We're just talking about satisfying audiences, not “good” endings.

Episode 234 - Climactic Climaxes!

What's best? One big climax, multiple small ones, early, or delayed? How much should you work UP to a climax? What about anticlmactic events, how important are they? Climaxes are really important in stories. Often you work up to them over the course of a whole series, but each episode or chapter can have them, maybe even every single page. I find writing “up” to climaxes a bit stressful because you have a lot of preasure and expectation there. And when it's over and you've actually achieved it, it can be a bit depressing: where do you go to from there? You can feel a little lost, at least I do. TALKING ABOUT WRITING HERE. My preference is for multiple climaxes. Do you always need climaxes in stories? I don't think you do personally… there are times when things work fine without one, but it does help better with endings. Sometimes climaxes can be TOO big. Way too much of a story can be invested in a climax, it subsumes everything, everything has to tie in with that specific story flow and that can be REALLY had to pull off. If it's not done right it can be massively disappointing. Anticlimactic.
