Episode 178 - thematical thematology

For this DD webcomics podcast, Quackcast 178, we talk about THEMES. And no, we're not talking about those fine musical tracks that Gunwallace has been making for our comics. Theme is what's happening below the surface plot of a story. Plot is the events that happen, and theme is what it all means. We asked people What they thought about themes in their work, how they approach them, do you put themes in there on purpose, or does it happen by accident? Is a theme even necessary? We also asked people to talk about some of the themes in their work. We had some very interesting contributions. Themes in stories in comics, movies, TV shows and books are not things we tend to think about that much unless we're trying to be clever but they're an all pervasive and important part of any story nevertheless!

Episode 169 - The Chatcast!

In this fake Chatcast, Ozoneocean and Banes receive calls from their versions of various duckers who ask many interesting questions such as "Where do you get your ideas from?", and "Where do you get your ideas from?", and the always popular and thought provoking enigma of our time; "Where do you get your ideas from?". Our fake callers include Bravo1102, Skulbie, Lonnehart, Skoolmunkee, Ironscarf, Genejoke, and Pitface who called especially to tell us about her epic shoe buying expedition. We really had a marvellous time talking to all these totally counterfeit versions of these wonderful people!

Finally the last part of our Mecha and weaponry Quackcast, where we opened to the thoughts of the community to see what they had to say on the idea of developing and using weaponry and mecha in comics and how they go about it. We had some good discussion on the subject and some very thought provoking and intelligent opinions from obviously very well informed people; our DD community! Kawaiidaigakusei joined Banes and I again to talk this one out and provide some great opinions and insight of her own. Here's a correction: Shinji's suit in Neon Genesis Evangelion is actually blue and white!
Episode 166 - Opinions on Weaponry and mecha

Continuing our theme on Mecha and weaponry in webcomics we opened the discussion to our DD creators and they had some very interesting things to say! I fact there were so many interesting contributions that we had to split it up over two Quackcasts- this being the first. We start of with a little comedy quiz on what's mecha and what isn't and then play another great music piece by Gunwallace, this time a theme for Pinky TA! Very appropriate to the discussion... Then we launch into the great contributions!

Today Banes and I have a little talk about weaponry and mecha in webcomic- how do you come up with it? How much research do you do? Should it actually work? Is coolness the only factor to consider? How detailed do you go when you design it? how far away from reality and cartoony is appropriate? We consider most of those questions and a few more, there's a LOT to get into on a topic like this and we really only just barely scratch the surface! In my own webcomic Pinky TA I've done a LOT of research and design work to get my mecha and weaponry looking right, so this is a subject dear to me. But we all have our own opinions on this, not just in webcomics but in games, movies, anime, and manga. Episode 144 - Bold New Experiment with the Top Ten!

For this Quackcast it's just Ozone aaaaaand HippieVan! We're discussing various things, the most important of which is the Top Ten rating system for the front page of DD. It has been frozen solid since the site stopped tracking stats about TWO years ago. Hopefully we'll restart hat when we figure out how to code it up, but for now HippieVan and Irreverent came up with a good idea: The Top Ten comics will be based on how many "likes" they have. This will be calculated every week by HippieVan. So now comics have the ability to get into the top ten if they can get enough "Likes", so start campaigning people and you'll have a spot on the front page! Unfortunately we're not including Adult rated comics in that list because those can't be seen by people who aren't signed into the site so would just look like blank boxes on the front page. Never fear though, Adult comics are still ranked proudly on the comic search page in their true like order.

Skyfox Kawaiidaigakusei, Master Banes, and Captain Ozone come together to chat about this week's comic feature which is The Devon Legacy, then they go on to chat about what Kawaiidaigakusei will be doing for DD as our new featurer and Monday Newsposter. They also wax nostalgic on the history of The Duck, possible improvements, then get back on track and chat to Kawaiidaigakusei about comic featuring qualifications... and finally just chat about DD stuff in general. Episode 116 - Bravo in the Valley of the Dolls

This week Banes and I speak to the dangerous, paranoid, recluse known ONLY by the mysterious call sign: Bravo1102. We tracked this fearsome wildman down, deep in a dark forest, living alone in a lonely lone shack, feeding on squirrels and noodle flavoured earthworms. It was from this flawed mastermind that we gained fascinating insights into creating comics with photography, plastic action figures, painstakingly constructed sets, and hand built models. For Banes and I it opened up a whole new world... but at the end we realised that we'd only barely scratched the surface, so next week we plan on retracing our steps back to the lonely shack in the deep dark forest and once again confronting Bravo1102 and pumping him for all he knows!
