Episode 470 - What stirred your creative juices?

For this cast I'd thought we'd go through with our promise of last week and talk about things that have made us have a reaction as a creator. This expands on “The Cartoons that Date us” from last week. So today we're talking the creative media that gave you a reaction: Books, movies, comics, TV shows… Not what specifically inspired the comics you do now, but what drove you to create and why.

When I was young for me it was things like Ed-209 in Robocop, the design of the fighters in Robotech, and the mechanical design in Thundercats. That mecha was so awesome it inspired me to design interesting machines. Lord of the Rings (the books), inspired me to create fantasy art and think about fantasy stories. After watching Tank Girl I stayed up all night drawing a giant image of a tank with Tank Girl inspired women cavorting all over it. Banes talks about being inspired by the band from The Muppets, Tantz talks about the books and stories that inspired her to create alternative endings to them, like Harry Potter.
We'd love to hear about what were the things that stirred up YOUR creative loins back in the day! What were the things that drove you to create and make, write and play music? What was the grit in the oyster shell of your mind that cause you to create a pearl?
The musical feature this week that Gunwallace has given us is another theme to Sex Protectress! This was the original theme he created, he wasn't happy with it but I asked to hear it and loved it. Industrial, synth metal! Fast, burning, heavy, urgent, dark, black, acid, electronic… buzzing. This one seeps up from deep underground pipes, a viscous tarry substance, flaming up as soon as it touches the open air, super-heating and then evaporating.

This Quackcast was inspired by the fan reaction to Game of Thrones, a series that I haven't watched but Tantz and Banes have! Specifically it's about poorly written endings and gas-lighting fans rather than admitting to faults.
Episode 425 - Pay-off or rip-off?

In this Quackcast we chat about set-ups. pay-offs, and rip-offs. To make your climaxes and endings more satisfying you have pay-offs for audience expectations: set them up in the story and pay them off at the end. If you fail to pay-off then you get a rip-off, it's pretty simple. Your audience will be really disappointed. That's not to say disappointing and unsatisfying ends to stories are wrong, not at all! Often those are fully intended. We're just talking about satisfying audiences, not “good” endings.

Almost exactly 100 Quackcasts later we hit the booze again, but this time we had a goal to pursue with our drunken ramblings: music. We decided to talk about what themes inspire our comics, inspire us and represent our comic characters… and we came up with a LOT, too bloody much for me to link to dammit! Episode 234 - Climactic Climaxes!

What's best? One big climax, multiple small ones, early, or delayed? How much should you work UP to a climax? What about anticlmactic events, how important are they? Climaxes are really important in stories. Often you work up to them over the course of a whole series, but each episode or chapter can have them, maybe even every single page. I find writing “up” to climaxes a bit stressful because you have a lot of preasure and expectation there. And when it's over and you've actually achieved it, it can be a bit depressing: where do you go to from there? You can feel a little lost, at least I do. TALKING ABOUT WRITING HERE. My preference is for multiple climaxes. Do you always need climaxes in stories? I don't think you do personally… there are times when things work fine without one, but it does help better with endings. Sometimes climaxes can be TOO big. Way too much of a story can be invested in a climax, it subsumes everything, everything has to tie in with that specific story flow and that can be REALLY had to pull off. If it's not done right it can be massively disappointing. Anticlimactic. For our FINAL part of our discussion of story endings we talk about yet MORE ending tropes, methods and styles. In a fit of towering arrogance and indefensible pomposity we even trash the mighty Shakespeare for his ending of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet! Our contributors offered up some truly interesting perspectives on the matter or constructing story endings and we give them their due respect by reading them out in strange voices... As I've said in all of these so far: writing the end of a story is the hardest part so we hope to provide some clues on how to write a good one. Ad with that we reach the END of our exploration of ends! Next week we interview AMY and Nick from CHARBY THE VAMPIRATE!!!
