Episode 608 - Lovers and other things

Nov 7, 2022

There are all kinds of relationships and they're great fodder for stories. The most typical is when two characters are getting INTO a relationship- all that will they/wont they stuff. But characters could also be ending a relationship, or maybe ending one in order to get into another, they could even be in a stable, long term relationship, although those aren't quite as common in media. My favourites are the ones where sex and attraction isn't a factor: relationships between family members, co-workers, friends etc. For some reason when it's platonic I find that a lot more compelling than sexual tension, especially when there would normally be the potential for sex- i.e. two unrelated compatible people with the same sexual and gender preference.

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Angel Academy - A little like the Ghost in the Shell movie theme. This music sores high through the stone vaulted ceiling of a vast cathedral tower, reaching the heavens and beyond. Golden rays of sun shine down from celestial silver tinted clouds. Thundering drums, breathy chorus intoning like the notes of panpipes, and all the sounds echo and reverberate imperially.

Ahhhh! Yes, I HAVE seen that actually. It's very touching and beautiful. Haven't seen the manga but yeah the anime is wonderful.

I seriously recommend it, it deals with a lot of heavy subjects: deafness, depression, bullying, suicide... and does it with depth. Some of the deepest, more complex characters I've seen in anime (the manga only gives more context to them). Plus the directing is beautiful. Boy and girl meet when smol in school, girl is deaf, boy is bored, so he starts to bully her. She leaves school, he becomes a target for bullying. Years later he finds the girl to try and make amends, make up for the pain he caused. Damn, the manga even goes into detail about how teachers can be compliants to bullying and how the lives of relatives are affected by these things. Apart from Neon Genesis Evangelion it's my favorite anime and it's only a movie, but a time well-spent.

I don't think I know that anime...? But yeah, if it's a love story it helps that the characters are more than just their feelings for the other character- they're not just plot devices.

I find great value in stories where the characters aren't defined by whether or not they're together, like they might have romantic feelings towards each other, might have sexual feelings as well, might even be a couple for some time, but their happiness and self-fulfillment doesn't entirely depend on such and they can be just friends. I think it can really add to the story and help give the characters agency and depth. But more than average, intimacy and connection can't just happen for its own reasons, can't have value of its own, it needs to tell a story which leads to a happy relationship, love fulfilled, etc. And I get that it's a desire for most and a fantasy they like to entertain, but it can really divert the focus from other aspects (for example make you feel that two people caring for each other makes sense BECAUSE they're in love and otherwise it wouldn't), which is why I'm glad they didn't force the message in the Koe no Katachi anime adaptation for example.
