SS7 30 Laura takes the stage
skyangel on Oct. 21, 2019
Just before we join the girls on what will be a very eventful night out I wanted to jump forward to the present day again for a couple of pages to underline Laura's personality. It's a very important scene because Laura has always been a quiet obstacle in Sarah's relationship with Lucy and despite Lucy's assurance that Laura understands she is now with Sarah, and Sarah having given them both space to be sure they no longer have strong feelings towards each other, she has lately been feeling she has kept Lucy at arm's length for too long.
The importance of this scene is that it not only gives us a more defined focus on Laura's personality as a whole but also prepares us
for how she must have felt on their night out.
*** For the SS buffs! ***
On a side note, when I'm in the process of writing each chapter I always have a handful of tunes I like to listen to for inspiration and it's been pointed out before that often SS reads like a movie, which is probably because I am such a movie buff! The comic has always been a bit of a personal scrapbook from the start too with almost every picture on the wall or book with a readable title having some meaning to me, so for this last chapter I thought the theatre performance was a nice excuse to indulge some of those tunes that have inspired me in the production of this comic, this one especially because this scene and this piece of music have been together in my mind since I started typing the scripts for this last chapter.
Have a nice week :)

Dear Sky, I can understand how she might think of herself as a victim. After all, her parents took advantage of the epiletic fit to LIE straight to her face about the "Death" that did not occur. How does "victim" turn into "loser"? Fantastic view last panel "Phantom of the Opera " must be watching also :) tommym

Tommym: The term 'loser' here is just Sarah trying to imagine how Laura might feel with all her bad luck so far. As for that last panel, thanks for that because it took ages to draw!! :)

Fruitbat: Me neither but I often listen to a piece like this for so long that when I finally get to see the movie I feel that music no longer belongs to the movie because I've attached it to a different situation in my head for so long! I'd rather not comment too much on the rest of your observations etc as most of what you have put will be answered in the next page or be an important part of the finale that I wouldn't want to spoil now by saying yes or no. I wouldn't say contempt though, that's not really Sarah but it's still an interesting angle you've considered.

Sky: glad you find my observations interesting. Though as you say, contempt isn't really Sarah. And thanks for sharing how music influences your work. Keenly anticipating what happens next.

I've never seen the movie, but I have just listened to the theme - and yes, I can see how that would work for this scene. It does make me wonder what happens in the weeks leading up to this scene, did this triangle finally resolve itself? Laura seeing herself as a born loser & a natural victim, is Sarah feeling sad for her, and empathising over all the bad that had happened to Laura, even if - as I'm guessing - Lucy chose Sarah over her? But there is one possibility, but I'm pretty sure I'm wrong about it, but might Sarah feeling not pity for "born loser" Laura, but contempt? Nah, I think I'm wrong about that.

No matter how 'basic' you make them, drawing a crowd like that is a right pain in the arse B-) Poor Laura.

Bear: Totally! There's an art to doing vague interpretation for sure and I felt they still had to look human so I ended up putting more effort in than I'd originally intended.

That's an impressive crowd. Lots of tiny people.

Dotcrossbuns: I regretted it once I started drawing them as it took a lot longer than I'd intended!

These concert hall scenes are just magnificently colored.

Thank you Fred! It was very challenging.

NicAndBen: I often hear soundtrack music long before I see the film and this is one of those pieces. It's a film I've always been curious about that so it would be nice to see how the music fits it some day.
