Strip XXVI: Taking Levana Away

J_Scarbrough on Jan. 11, 2023

I have quite a bit to say about this particular strip, starting with once again, I'm actually happy with how the layout and composition turned out.

One little piece of trivia is that even though I never have considered or had a desire to adapt VAMPIRE GIRL into animation (I have toyed with the idea of adapting it into a live-action short film - I could see Ainsley Seiger playing Levana), I do get asked from time to time who I could imagine providing the voices for the characters (my thoughts on which you can read about in this old Scarblog entry chronicling the original comic's 10th anniversary). For Saul (the shorter of the two), I had Chick Vennera in mind . . . I started working on the current season/chapter of the comic in advance (as a matter of fact, I happened to be inking Strip XVIII just as the January 6 insurrection unfolded), and it was by the time that I got around to working on this particular strip when Vennera died. Since then, I have thought about who else I could imagine doing his voice, and the only other person who comes to mind who can do that sort of Joe Pesci/Bruno Kirby type of voice is Carlos Alazraqui (or Bill Hader, but I'm kind of a snob when it comes to giving voice acting gigs on silver platters to former SNL castmembers, while depriving actual professional voice actors of their own work). It definitely could work, I think.

Another piece of trivia is you may have noticed some of the fliers and posters tacked to that bulletin board in the fifth panel - these are little shout-outs I slipped in to other webcomics I discovered and enjoyed during that very brief time I was on ComicFury before I got kicked out and had to move here instead. Clockwise from the top left are SPACE PACK by Slingy (which can also be read here on The Duck), HOPE by Wynaut Warrior, TWEEZEN: LIGHT OF THE SHADOW by Tezian H.D. Bryant, MILDRETH OF THE NIGHT by Jean Q. Citizen, MARA & GEDON: DESTROYERS OF WORLDS by Cait Magne, and EAST TO WEST by Pappy. All of these are really great comics, and I would highly recommend them.
