Episode 182 - Biggest mistakes made in starting a webcomic

Aug 14, 2014

This Quackcast came about in response to an article that was supposed to be about the biggest mistakes in starting out with a webcomic, I felt it was incredibly superficial and that it was mainly focussed on someone who wanted to go straight for the “pro” side, jump right in and make it BIG right away… The trouble is that there's WAAAAAAY more to the subject than that! Hence this Quackcast on the subject. I've seen thousands of webcomics come and go over the years, most fizzle out in the first few weeks or months for a whole lot of reasons, but even the ones that have staying power still run into many issues at the beginning. Here we cover a lot of the big mistakes webcomic creators make early on. We've also got some great contributions too!

Episode 155 - A Moment with Modest Medusa

After a terrible bathroom flooding incident Modest Medusa was born. That's sort of the beginning of the story of Modest Medusa, but also how the comic began too! In this Quackcast I interview Jake Richmond, the creator of the very successful and popular Modest Medusa: a pretty amazing webcomic success story. Starting out at Drunk Duck with his comic in 2011 he's been able to quit his main day job and work on his comic full time! He does some freelancing and teaching as well, but his comic is his main source of income. That's awesome! And this wasn't by luck either, or “being in the right place at the right time” that many have leveraged much of their success from, Jake got there though hard work and dedication to his readers. A real webcomic inspiration! This is the goal that every webcomicer should be aiming for and his success shows that it IS acheiveable! - Only IF you can put in that work though. It's not easy, no short-cuts.

You can join the discussion to help direct how the awards will work, you can try and become an awards judge or you can even try and get your wonderful webcomic nominated for a DD Award!!!! Actually, even if you don't DO a comic you can nominate your faves and help along with the whole process. At the moment they want you to submit a bit of artwork on a fun theme where your characters try and raise money to help with the awards, as a way of showcasing your stuff and helping you get nominated/voted for. Skool has temporarily reformed from her evil ways to come onto the Quackcast with Banes and Ozoneocean to talk about some changes to the newsposting and feature schedule. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *WITH SLIGHTLY LESS TRAFFIC to the site we think it’s better to give one feature an entire week’s focus and spotlight to get as much attention as possible, having it on Wednesday makes sense because it’s the middle of the week, Skool and I will both try and give a bit of a take on the week's feature, if not in the blurb, certainly on the Quackcast! And please remember to give us your feature suggestions! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *MONDAY NEWSPOSTS are now Skool’s space: Monday will be her place for posting her unique brand of skoolness...fun, interesting personality blog posts, not just standard news posts necessarily! Skool is in charge of our Tublr thing, but she also posts a whole lot of her own stuff in her Tumblr accounts. She can bring some of that picture flavoured magic to the newsposts instead to entertain with her personality, give the site more of a face. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *THURSDAY'S NEWSPOSTS will be Ozoneocean's pale reflection of Skool's magnificent greatness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *FRIDAYS ARE A NORMAL NEWSPOSTING DAY, but we're going to widen what can go up for DD member newsposts! NOT just 25 page milestones. now we'd like you to tell us about uupcoming projects, news about special things like a comic being published, or comic having special coverpages or crossovers or other newsworthy stuff so we can get the word out and advertise your work for you! Even things like New character introductions, Introductions of new comics that’re just starting, Clever ads for long running already established webcomics or related items like comic Facebook, Google+, Tumblr, Youtube, twitter accounts etc. As long as it's not spammy we'd like to know about it!

In this Quackcast Banes and I come back to our series on real world comic collaboration. If you've been listening a while you may recall that he and I decided to start up a comic together between the two of us. We talked about the process of getting that started. Here we revisit the idea and talk about how we're going with it so far... have there been any arguments? Any flakeouts? Disasters? Can Banes get his soufflé to rise juuuuust right? Will Ozone fail in his first catwalk runway show? The viewers must know! A collaborative comedy comic is a hard road when you're starting from scratch and we give you a real world view on how we two are doing with it. Note: Quackcasts will take a break over Christmas and New Year and will be back on the 8th of January!

Episode 56 - BASO Profundo Post Feature Interview

This particular Quackcast marks the very first time I've ever interviewed a featured comic creator, just after his feature! Genejoke was kind enough to descend from his palatial Robinson Crusoe style palm tree manor house on the tropical shores of southern Britain, wearing a rumpled cream linen suit and a white panama hat. Sipping a dry Martini in the hot noon sun he slipped on his half coconut headphones and spoke into a conch shell for the interview about his fantastic featured SciFi space opera comic: B.A.S.O - See Genejoke's profile and his stuff here: http://www.drunkduck.com/user/Genejoke

Episode 55 - Genres Revisited

My attractive assistant Skoolmunkee agreed to another guest appearance in order to re-adress this topic. I asked people about their favourite webcomic genres, why they like them and what makes them so cool and interesting, whether it's the genre they like to read or create in. The genres we covered chiefly in your previous genre Quackcast (number 29, http://www.drunkduck.com/quackcast/episode-29-genres-generally-speaking/), were fantasy, slice of life, post apocalypse, and spiritual, and declared that post apocalypse the winner. This time we all decide that steam/diesel/cyberpunk is best! We briefly try and tackle superheros, but nothing much comes out of it except the brown Lantern...
