I hadn't realized how standard bullet-proof vests are for law enforcement until I had an LE roommate. I helped her suit up a couple times. She was park service LE, so she would be outside in 100+ Fahrenheit (38 C) for 10 hour shifts in that heavy vest mostly dealing with people who didn't want to see her. (Pretty much the opposite of my job description.)

The vest are very hot in the summer. Especially when standing on top of big metal objects.
