New habits for 2020

With the New Year’s celebrations been and gone, New Year’s resolutions are upon us. Although most of us may be setting comic goals for 2020, it’s important to remember that we need to take care of our physical and mental wellbeing. This is easier said than done, that much is certain, but if we are to deliver on our creative goals, we need to ensure we are establishing good habits for ourselves. Here are some simple things you can do this year to help you build some healthy habits.

Get up and stretch
This is a big one! It’s very easy to fall into the habit of sitting for hours on end drawing comics. To help you to remember to get up from your chair, set an alarm for an hour. When it goes off, get up, and stretch your arms, hands, back, shoulders and legs. This will not only reduce repetitive strains on your muscles but also get some oxygen into your lungs, thus helping you think clearly.

Schedule rest days
This has been a big thing for me. I make sure that I schedule days to be away from my phone and from my projects. On these days I do something different, such as go out, spend time with friends or catch up on shows or books I’m in the middle of. This helps reset my brain, and has reduced bouts of creative block.

Make a point to stay hydrated
Again, this was a habit I started in 2019 and it has been one that has helped immensely. My skin is not as dry and feel less tired as my body is getting the water it needs. I have a bottle on my desk and in my room as well as one I carry when I go out, so that I have no excuse but to drink water. This will help keep your mind alert and clear.

Get proper sleep
This is a hard one! As a night owl it is all too easy for me to stay up to 3am if there is nothing pressing that needs to be done the next day. Of course, this might be okay for a day or two, but my mental health begins to slip if it becomes the routine. I aim to get 7-8hours sleep, with a bedtime that’s before midnight. I also wear a sleeping mask as I discovered I’m sensitive to light. This will do wonders for you.

Excellent advice - with work and other daily needs, it's easy to go overboard into the wee hours working on artistic pursuits. Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Excellent tips, and things that every creator should remember! Even if you happen to be on a schedule that is different from most, it can be very helpful to keep a schedule, and that can help you to get the rest you need. I would say that this is the backbone to productivity, the foundation upon which everything else can be built: being able to focus and be conscious!
