This encounter went through quite a few rewrites. Misaki having her leg pinned was a last-minute idea. The thought hit my brain, and I liked it, so I included it. After I drew that page, I didn't have a plan for it. It was the dreaded Wrote-Myself-Into-A-Corner. I was dead-set that Misaki shouldn't be “rescued.” But she was stuck. So, I was stuck.

My first inclination was to have Dr. Clarke show up mid-fight and maybe reveal how she freed herself later. That was the laziest writing idea, and shame on me for considering it. My second idea was to show her fighting for her life while still trapped and free herself in the process. That was a badass idea. I didn't know exactly how she would manage it. I figure she's probably too hurt and exhausted, and I'm just not up to trying to choreograph that. Then one night, just like the thought to have her pinned to begin with, this idea came to me. Yes, she has to be “rescued,” but this way shows a character strength rather than weakness.
