HELLO—
I am LOTHAR

I would like to introduce you to the Bi-Monthly spotlight on some of the forgotten or abandoned comics we have lingering in the basement of Drunk Duck. Who knows why they stopped updating or what their authours are up to now. I think here on DD we have a unique oportunity to dive into some real webcomic history. As a lot of other hosts have gone bust over the years, some of these comics may actually exixst only here on DD.

I will post 3 Today. Here are the 3:

FIRST one here is a story from 2008 called The Archivists by a DD member who goes by “thearchivists”

The Archivists
I thought this one had some cool looking art. Lokks like water color or something. And the concept was kinda cool. I'll just quote directly from the Author's about section : “People are starting to loose their memories which causes an influx in cases for The Arkivists. As memories begin to dissolve, a disenchanted academic known as The Pilgrim tries to re-create
Nephilims-archaic angel hybrids that once descended from the sky. Calling upon his connections with an ancient sect, The Pilgrim alchemically fuses organic objects that he purchases from an unassuming and uninformed young boy. After becoming disheartened with his failed experiments, he quickly realizes that the superiority of the Nephilims does not lie within the
carnate body but in spiritual embodiment. Capitalizing on the memory pandemic striking the
human population. The Pilgrim tries to resurrect the Nephilims by replacing the disappearing the
memories with those of the ancient cult. It is up to The Arkivists to restore the original memories
and stop The Pilgrim from a religion of synthetic remembrance. ”

It's kind of a short story and I couldn't find any other instances of this comic online. Please post it if you know if the author has done anything else.

NEXT we have – Mist of The New World —
2014 by DD member - Zeleno

Mists of the New World

The description for the comic simply says “A sci-fi adventure in a strange universe !” Tha's my favorite kind of universe!

It's a little rough around the edjes and there is some wonky text but the story is pretty cool and I like the worldbuilding. I'm a sucker for desert localls and there's a mushroom planet. It feels like the author put a lot of thought into this unique world and it would be interesting to see where else the characters would have gone. It's too bad they quit, citing their alleged poor drawing skills as the reason and a derire to improve before coming back to this story. It makes me wonder if this artist is still out there somewhere on the web continuing this story under another pen-name.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ O O ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Number THREE: I'm including this third one because it's about the unwilling brainwashed victim of human sacrifice and I'v never seen a webcomic about that. Have you ? The story ends abruptly.
Well said, Paul
Awesome stuff you dug up there! The Duck is full of forgotten gems, and it's a good thing to bring some of them to the spotlight again. As for the discussion below: longevity and popularity have nothing to do with quality and skill. That's always been that way everywhere, and all those unfinished, vastly underestimated comics are a testimony of that. That doesn't however mean that comics that have lasted a long time and are popular with readers are automatically bad, and the way I read it, nobody here said that nor meant to say that. It just means that being good at what you do doesn't necessarily lead to getting the proper recognition for it either (no matter where you post it). Wish we could somehow notify these three artists that they're getting some long overdue applause.
GREETINGS--LOTHAR. I can not emphasize how happy I am for this newest segment. I even started reading "What our Eyes have Yet to See" and added it to my faves.
Drunk Duck (the duck) has so many forgotten gems. A spotlight on comics we have lingering in our basement is a GREAT idea. Often, I look at some of them popping up on the random list and think, "Wow this is great" only to see it's been dormant or abandoned. Thanks for doing this.
hushicho at 5:31PM, April 28, 2023
I think this is so great that you are doing this. It's a great idea for a regular column and it could really lead to some delightful discoveries!
Andreas_Helixfinger at 4:19PM, April 28, 2023
@Amelius - Let me clarify. When I wrote "it is a tradegy that we live in a world where mediocrity is rewarded as something groundbreaking, when most of the TRULY groundbreaking stuff is just passed by and forgotten" I had in mind that which is among creative works in general out in the world, not necesserily anything on this site. In fact I think the overwhelming majority of comics on this site is great, and I can say that without having read them because they are all in a good place, this site. That is assumptious, yes. But that's where my mind is. And anybody who've felt hurt by what I said. Don't be. I was drunk and in one of my more judgmental moods which comes out sometimes when I'm drunk. Don't take me too seriously.
skyangel at 12:57PM, April 28, 2023
I think you have started something pretty wonderful here. The entire Duck archive must be huge by now and when I think of the all the comics I have read on here myself over the years I'm always aware that there must be a lot of stuff I've missed, and you've just shared three such examples! I wouldn't be at all surprised if other sites follow your example at some point as it certainly keeps a site like this alive to be sharing older comics that can still impress new readers. Maybe some of these forgotten writers and artists will feel inspired to come back too!
Amelius at 10:15AM, April 28, 2023
Oh hey, Bravo and Andreas, either of you claiming the "thriving" comics on here are "garbage" and "mediocre" gonna say which comics you have in mind? Maybe refrain from this kind of thing in the future? It's toxic behavior, there's only one comic here that's actively not trying to be good (because it's literally made by committee as a joke because they think this site sucks and that's funny) and guess what, you can compliment the dead comics without petty insults to other talented people here? I know Banes is taking it in stride, but I'm sorry I've got no chill left for this crap. Be honest, would you really rate any of those in the top ten RIGHT NOW as they are, based on concept and how much is there, or are you being salty hipsters? Would these have even been in your reading list? They have potential but you know you'd resent them being popular, every "thriving" comic had their time in the shadows too, the difference is the authors that "thrive" didn't give up.
Amelius at 9:15AM, April 28, 2023
Nice, all three of these had interesting concepts and style, all three of these would've been on my reading list in the early days if I'd known they existed. Getting attention on this site is a struggle, and especially back in 2008 people were outright hostile to self-promo, so a lot of comics sort of quietly disappeared in shadow. Seeing the second comic quit because they were intimidated by some of the bigger comics is heartbreaking-- I wasn't a pro when I started, I just kept posting in spite of people dumping on it! (I'm still not a pro tbh I just post anyway!)
Banes at 8:55AM, April 28, 2023
@bravo - why did I feel instantly defensive when reading your comment? :p
Banes at 8:54AM, April 28, 2023
Very cool stuff, lothar, and welcome to the Newspost Association! This is a great idea and a worthy pursuit.
Andreas_Helixfinger at 7:00AM, April 28, 2023
It's like Charles Bukowski said in an interview once: "It's not that I'm particularly good, it's that they're SO fu**ing bad, you know!" (If you must know then, yes, I am drunk writing this^^)
I'm a fan of waterfilled island settings myself. I partially blame the Megaman Legends franchise and the Waterworld movie (1995) for this. These sounds like unique and fascinating stories that REALLY ought not to be passed by. It is a tradegy that we live in a world where mediocrity is rewarded as something groundbreaking, when most of the TRULY groundbreaking stuff is just passed by and forgotten. I will check these ones out. Thank you so, so much Lothar for bringing light to their existence here on DD.
bravo1102 at 3:55AM, April 28, 2023
So sad how some real garbage survives and thrives and these just disappeared.
Ironscarf at 3:45AM, April 28, 2023
Some really interesting stuff here, thanks for throwing light on them. They all had potential so the discovery is bittersweet and it's a shame the authors couldn't continue. Comics is hard.
