Zines were in the news recently
(https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/nov/28/zines-exhibition-brooklyn-museum-art)

What’s a zine you might ask? It’s a small print run, usually small sized, amateur magazine. Often using photocopied pages, hand stapled, and it can be very unpolished in terms of content, but doesn't have to be.

Zines were big in the late seventies and eighties. Many bands had fans that would put together zines that promoted their music, helping reach an audience that wasn’t being served by regular media.

In many ways zines were the webcomics and blogs of their day. There was a zine revival in the Riot Grrrl scene of the nineties, with zines that celebrated the bands of that era, but also explored topics of sexuality, womanhood, and feminism outside of the mainstream culture of the time.

I’ve been part of the New Zealand zine community since the nineties, and I am still involved. I make and sell and buy zines. There’s an annual zinefest where I live, and I’ve travelled around the country to visit many others.

A lot of my zines are made from content that I’ve put up on The Duck. A three part sampler Character Development story still sells, as does an All Unicorns To Battle Stations compilation. Recently I used my home printer to collect some of the stories I’d drawn for Genejoke’s Lite Bites and sold them for $2 a pop. Oddly enough, they didn’t sell, but my more expensive zines around them did.

The zine community is a very open and welcoming place. It’s full of people creating all kinds of content. Poetry, political commentary, natural history, stories about socks. I’ve bought zines about the contents of pencil cases, jellyfish, old cameras, social anxiety, the mating habits of native birds, and a compilation of Stardew Valley romance dialogue.

If there’s a zinefest near you, why not go along? You could even consider getting a stall and printing out some of your own comics to sell.

Seems like The Duck is a hotbed of zine-makes. Awesome.

My dad is gonna apply for an art exhibition within our region. I got some ideas that I think would work very well in zine format.

There's a great underground comic/zine convention called MOCCAfest near me that I try to go to every year. (I tabled there last year too)

What great timing. I'll be putting together a zine for the podcast I am on soon enough and I have been looking for more resources about them.

No zine scenes as such anywhere near my place, as far as I know. I'd be in at once if there were. Perhaps I could introduce my students to the concept of zines, though. If I can make sure that my telling them to try doesn't put them off of it, that is.

I don't know the scene well, but do have a couple zines - it would be fun to make some. Not even sure if we have such a scene where I live...

The zines and underground comix were great. Still a place for them but many folks like everything digital. Which is fine but sometimes your hands just need to reach out and touch something.

Our old Stalwart Hyena Hell became a Zine writer and she's been big in the Zine Scene for years now based out of Kentucky I believe. Her partner in New York is also big into zines too. It's a great outlet for webcomicers who get the format, especially in these times of people taking advantage of free crappy generative AI fed on copyrighted work- that's big business and non-creative people trying to make the creative industry sidelined and meaningless while they increase their share prices of the backs of billions of other people's IP for free. The Zine scene neatly circumvents that. It's a world where people prize quirkiness and individuality.
