Latest update news
Here's your weekly update for the progress of the site development! Three things:
- Alexey and I have come up with all the genres and things that will be in each of the lists on the front page! I'll list those bellow. You might have some suggestions about that.
- The rest of the money has all been paid for the front page, this was unfunded so came from me personally again, but I hope to balance that out eventually through ads, Patreon, and other ways of raising money. Alexey's charges are quite low though so we get good bang for our buck.
- Alexey is currently working on the News section of the front page, hence the cover image.
Front page top ten lists:
Put your thinking caps on because this could be tricky to comprehend, I'll try and be as clear as I can.
Em came up with 5 main lists that show up on the front page, you can see them all here https://next.theduckwebcomics.com/
This is them:
s1. ALL ACTION, NO TALK
s2. HERE FOR THE TEA
s3. OH! THE HORROR!
s4. TO HORIZONS BEYOND
s5. FOR THE LOLS
It's all very well to have different categories but what do they actually represent? We have a whole bunch of “genres” comics can be listed under, this is all of them:
g1. Abstract
g2. Adventure
g3. Fantasy
g4. Horror
g5. Mystery
g6. Noir
g7. Parody
g8. Political
g9. Real Life
g10. Romance
g11. Sci-Fi
g12. Spiritual
g13. Superhero
g14. Tribute
g15. War
g16. Western
There are also 3 “tones”:
T1. Comedy
T2. Drama
T3. Other
This is how I decided to parcel them out:
S1= g2, g6, g13, g15, g16.
S2= g1, g5, g8, g9, g10, g12, g14.
S3= g4.
S4= g3, g11.
S5= g7, T1.
- “For the lols” is the only one to get a “tone”, ie Comedy. Comedies can be in any category, but “Drama” and “Other” are excluded from the “For the lols” list.
- It might look as if “Here for the tea” is overloaded, but the reality is that a lot of those genres don't actually have many comics in them.
- “All action, no talk” is similar in that only a couple of the genres represent most of the comics.
- “To Horizons and Beyond” is a super-powered one with those those genres representing many comics.
- “Oh, the horror” is the only outlier because they're aren't many horror comics and that's its only genre… Not sure what to do about that. AT least it'll be a good loophole for a certain spot on the front page! Just do a horror comic… Or a horror comedy to double your chances.
- All these lists will have about 25 comics in them (because it horizontally scrolls), and will be ordered by popularity so that the front page shows visitors the “best” that the site has to offer, so to speak.
Also, PLEASE remember that the prime purpose of multiple lists is so that we have a LOT more comics getting a chance to be promoted on the front page, we want to increase their visibility.
- The “Favourites” list only shows up for logged in members (nothing will be there for people who are not logged in), and is ordered by most recent first, as are the “Recently Updated” and “Featured comics”.
What do you think?

Ah, I see! What do we replace the titles with then? Maybe we keep them and just add a subtitle with the genres underneath? Hmm, the genre and styles aren't an exact science but Noir and Superhero ARE more genres than styles because you can have both Mangas and fury comics that are in the Superhero or noir genres, I've seen that plenty of times XD We'll working it out! Hmm the only way to do a perpetual thing there is to use a forum post. :(
Amelius at 10:10AM, Oct. 30, 2022
@Oz:Haha, you mighta missed me saying so on one of the other posts 'cuz I spoke up and shared your opinion on the names XD I just try to be delicate because I appreciate the work Emma did, and don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. We really need a master thread to consolidate and organize stuff I think, and link to it when you make these front page announcements. I'm a word-wall builder and feel constrained in this format! Ah, as to anthro/furry I slightly disagree (even if you are technically, correct) because we have superhero and noir as a genre. :)
Ozoneocean at 9:56AM, Oct. 30, 2022
@Amelius- yeah, I found the names obscure too, but last time I asked for advice on those no one really spoke up so I thought everyone liked them XD Anthro, Slice of life and Manga sort of fit within all the other genres. I mean Anthro and Manga aren't actually genres, they're styles, the stories told with those styles of comic are the same genres as all the rest pretty much. Though people like Manga and anthro comics just for that style, this is true. Maye we can think about new style categories, or at least add them to the search page. @Cdmalcom, we all like manga.
cdmalcolm1 at 8:23AM, Oct. 30, 2022
I know most of you all don’t like manga but it didn’t make the list? It seems like the new list is hiding comics. I know for sure I won’t remember which one will be for a certain category. I agree with Amelius. But I’m sure it will work out if you have “key words” for comic presented here on the Duck when we are doing descriptions like comic fury have per page. Well that’s my two pennies on this. Outside that, just wondering when is the release date on the site?
Amelius at 8:57AM, Oct. 29, 2022
I'm trying to sort these out (was, before my computer restarted and obliterated my efforts) and I'm noticing 2 rather large genres are missing from our criteria: anthropomorphic and slice of life. Nothing to be done now, just an observation. Also... I thought those names were cute placeholders in the design doc, not the names we were officially going with... I don't mean to be harsh, but they don't clearly communicate what their genres are. For the Lols is obvious but Here for the Tea probably isn't well understood and is going to date our site fast-- part of the point of a redesign is future proofing it a little. I wouldn't want to put my comic in the "petty internet gossip" category. I know we're trying to fit a lot into 5 categories while other sites have like 10 right out there, but believe me-- just flat out labeling the genres contained in each is boring but a helluva lot better than confusing people.
Ozoneocean at 9:27PM, Oct. 28, 2022
Comics can't have multiple genres yet... If we DO allow that though we would have a "main" genre that the creator would have to pick, that would be used for the front page listing, and then maybe up to 3 secondary genres that would only be used for searches.
Ozoneocean at 9:25PM, Oct. 28, 2022
Yes, comedies have a gig advantage, BUT I'm not sure I mind that because they're a very popular genre (so people want to read them) and they're on the lowest of the lists so they're not going to get that much extra attention for their dedicated list. They can keep it for now. I'm more concerned that horror comics get such a huge boost.
Ozoneocean at 9:21PM, Oct. 28, 2022
Adventure should be a tone, yeah... but it sort of works as a category list too anyway since it has all those other genres in it.
Ozoneocean at 9:20PM, Oct. 28, 2022
Blocking is a higher level programming thing. We couldn't tackle that at this stage because we're focused on design, but it can be considered in a future round of development
Ozoneocean at 9:18PM, Oct. 28, 2022
Adult comics are a possibility. -But only showing for logged in members and people would have the option to turn it off to because some don't want to see that stuff. - Even though they can show up in any of these lists.
Jason Moon at 7:23AM, Oct. 28, 2022
Over on CF they have a user block/comic block feature. DD is such a cool community with pretty friendly webcomic artists so it's really not needed but maybe it wouldn't hurt to have it. I've seen it put to good use though on CF when it came to an individual attacking another persons artwork/comic and they were able block them. I've also heard of people blocking comics they feel is always displayed and contains imagery they don't want to see.
HawkandFloAdventures at 4:52AM, Oct. 28, 2022
The New site redesign looks epic I hope you keep adventure as a genre. It's been a big help for me so far
marcorossi at 3:51AM, Oct. 28, 2022
My two cents: "adventure" should be under "tones" rather than "genres". Also, can people pick more than one genre for their comic?
bravo1102 at 3:03AM, Oct. 28, 2022
Should add an additional category for adult comics even if it just goes by the rating. There are some who realize that the internet is for porn and structure their browsing appropriately.
PaulEberhardt at 2:59AM, Oct. 28, 2022
One small thing, though: comedy comics get a slight advantage, don't they? If I read it correctly, they'll get a chance to show up in two categories, e.g. a scifi horror comedy ("Yo Momma Is a Tentacle Monster from Space") could be featured either in both s4 and s5 or in both s3 and s5, depending on the label the artist gave it, doesn't it? I'm not sure if there should be something similar for Drama and Other. I expect there's a large difference in the number of comics between tones. Also, I'd suggest asking creators of adult comics if they prefer to have their stuff listed as "Sexy and I know it" or something, or listed among the other stories - actually I'm thinking of audiences here, as I don't know how many people are annoyed by finding porn when looking for stories and how many by finding stories when looking for porn. And if that should create too much of a bias towards, say, comedy horror porn ("Count C*ckula's Crazy Creep Joint"), how can we compensate? (no innuendo intended)
PaulEberhardt at 2:57AM, Oct. 28, 2022
I like the creative approach to the main lists. Must have taken a while to figure out how to do this best. (applause) I hope not too many people will object to details ("But that would put my neo-noir comic into the same category as superheroes! It only features physically impossible violent stunts, because I never paid attention in school." "But my P.I. character only drinks latte macchiato, not tea..." ;) ) I certainly don't! Genre labels never fit everything either - for instance, I could never quite figure out how to label magic realism in DD's genre list - and anyway, what you really want a genre label for is to make it easier for the right people to find your comic. With the front-page categories, genre labels matter a good deal less for this and generally increase these chances for everyone.
hushicho at 12:22AM, Oct. 28, 2022
I really love the idea of featuring as many comics, and as much of a variety of comics, as possible, so I'm all for this! The work on the site redesign is inspiring, and I'm very excited for the Duck. Thank you most of all for listening to the people here and always seemingly working to make sure everyone gets some notice. It's much appreciated and so different from most places, especially creative hosts.

Lookin' good. Also probably my only chance of getting in the top 10, so you have my blessing.
