Hello everyone, and welcome to Panel by Panel, a periodic exploration of comic panels around The Duck. This week we're talking about the comic Lite Bites. Specifically, a story called “After; Fire Sale.” b]Lite Bites is an anthology series edited by Genejoke, and “Fire Sale” was written by Gunwallace and illustrated by Skreem. Full disclosure, I cannot find a link to Skreem's profile or if Skreem is a name used separately from a profile name. As for where our panel is located, it is on page three of the story. The panel in question is the entire page.
Abstract imagery can be tough to get right. At a certain point, abstraction can be messy or confusing, but that is not the case here. Skreem does an excellent job of creating strange representations of cosmic beings that are possibly gods - or possibly the shifting form of a single God. The usage of texture on the page is also wonderful, whether it is the blackened daubs of the void framing the imagery, to the colorful, watercolored fillings of the rough line art.
Of course, I am fudging the rules a bit here. Each beat of image and text can be treated as a panel. Therefore we'd have three on this page. But I think all three work quite well in concert, a form of abstraction that reflects the amorphous representation of cosmic power seen on the page.
I would love to know in this collaboration how much of this imagery was determined by the artist and how much was planned by Gunwallace, who wrote the story. As for the writing, the dialogue is snappy and bouncy from abstract image to abstract image, creating a fun flow for the overall page. The whole tale also makes for an interesting alternative exploration of the story of Prometheus.
What do you all think, though? Would you pause if you were flipping through a comic on the shelf and saw this page? I know I would. I think that's a strong form of praise.

The visuals are all Skreem. My script just had something very simple, leaving entire scope up to the artist. Which with Skreem was always a great idea.
