I've looked at few, but most of the ones in my area are automotive mechanics…not my cup of tea.

But auto mechanics would make you more money though. Its a fun trade. But the downside is the grease and exposure to those fumes and chemicals. Its also quite dangerous. I saw a guy get his pants on fire while welding a muffler.

In my honest opinion though, I think it is a waste of money to go to university to be an illustrator. Sorry for sounding kinda harsh here.

You see, that was my original intent. To pursue art as something professional. But in the end, because of economic prospects and the thought of sustaining survival, I had to abandon ship. Because I wondered. What kind of job will I get with that kind of degree? And with the economy in N. America heading towards a SERVICE SECTOR ECONOMY and the whole art field being too oversaturated.

A mcjob? Then I'd be instantly trapped in DEBT. Struggling paycheck to paycheck to get that shit paid.

Thats why I invested my extra money in learning vocational trades. At least I know the basic stuff. And I'm not scared of getting laid off as well as I'm absolutely confident of finding a job within a week or 2 after I get laid off. I can work in construction or landscaping or automotive helper… I can do office jobs since thats what I'm doing now. I got a clean driving record so I can use my car (or someone else's car) to make me some money. Maybe upgrade my license a bit so I can start driving trucks. The straight trucks or the cube vans. I'm still scared of driving those tractor trailers.

This is just my thought I like to share with you. Good luck.

Whoa whoa whoa, is this part a personal reflection or did I make the impression that I was going in for illustration?

I agree with you about that either way, I was just wondering.

I mean, I'd love to go to school for art but it doesn't seem so practical. Incidentally, I am applying to an art school (pot-dream),I don't think it'll do me any good, but the other two schools aren't art schools.
I wouldn't be able to make it professionally in art, but I would have a degree, and I could spend my 3 or 4 years and thousands of dollars doing something I enjoy.

Also I found out in a really painful and expensive way that art's pretty much all I'm good at (what I learned in college part I). And selling gas and hotdogs…I'm good at that too.

P.S. I'm not a miser, and I have no real interest in being rich, but I can't spend money I don't have so that later I can earn money I don't want. I hate money.

P.P.S

Jeeze. Go to another country to learn, it can be a lot cheaper, even with travel and accommodation costs. We had a lot of South East Asians and Norwegians (special arrangements), at my old Uni- In Perth Western Australia. But people come from all over the place, the US included.
That would probably have worked out a lot better when I was in Australia 7 years ago when the exchange rate was something like 1 USD=1.7 AUD or something. -_- The US dollar has sunk a lot.

I think he was referring to me.

And while you think that kyupol, I'm going to do it anyway. I feel it's the best way for me to learn the things I need to the most. Personal feelings is all of it really. Don't get me wrong, I've worked for a logging company and on a cattle ranch, and I know I couldn't stand living my life doing those sorts of things.

I never planned on going to school for only one degree. Art is what I love doing and what I'm best at, but that doesn't mean I can't get a degree in another field as well to make sure I get a job. I might have my doubts, but there's no point in life doing something I hate. I want to informed about the field I'm going into is all.

*psst* lba, search through the threads here:

You'll learn lots for that type of work, remember to completely learn human anatomy though at some time, it's invaluble in any art work field.
Seriously.

Kc greens “Horribleville” has left Drunkduck. That makes it the fourth comic that i used to follow that have moved away. “Beaver and Steve” “Alpha shade” and “Gunnerkrigg Court” are the other ones.

Sure, i now follow them at their separate websites but i remember how easy it was in the golden days of DrunkDuck when all these “big” comics were all at the same place.

Things change… :(

In regard to the art school thing, (sorry to bust in on the topic change)I actually went to school for illustration myself…

…and now I…am a receptionist for a newspaper *cough*

But on the other hand, I barely passed. Got all C's and D's, which likely means I just don't have a head for it. AND ALSO I'm not sorry, I did it. Not at all. Because I enjoyed every moment.

I saw this crazy Filipino movie in where one guy was able to pwn 20 guys armed with an assortment of M16s and submachineguns… while being cornered and surrounded. Literally. Not in some building where the bad guys appear one by one.

Hero only uses two berretas to do the pwnage. And without even being touched by a single bullet. wow.

I think I might put that kind of scene in my comics.

lmao!!! lol!

If you think that's impressive, you should see the movie where a Bruce Lee impersonator fights Kung Fu gorillas (that's right, gorillas, not guerillas)! He showed that indigenous wildlife.

I hate it when newspapers spout bullshit about labor shortage and global warming.

Labor shortage my ass. What a big fucking joke when thousands of people get laid off.

Global warming my ass. CO2 is something that plants breathe. All animals exhale CO2.

And what about that oh-so-deadly SARS virus. What happened to that?

Global warming my ass.

The earth right now is supposed to be in for an ice age apparently- it comes the exact same period the exact same amount of years, there's a chart on it by those people who study the earths rock layers.
So what if global warming is the only thing keeping us from freezing to death?(granted we could cut down on it)

Also I wish i was prettier. Everything's better when your pretty, even food.

While climate change is probably a real thing and something that people need to take note of, I should point out this is somewhat erroneous. Right now we're in what is called a interglacial period, basically a period between ice ages. The thing about interglacials is that it's pretty much impossible to directly predict when they end. Michael Chrighton, author of Jurassic Park, is largely responsible for the pro-climate change people believing this. Allow me to elaborate.

Michael Chrighton doesn't care about black people. Or climate change, he thinks that it outright doesn't exist. So in his tirades against it, he uses this “evidence” that scientists are clearly at fault by saying that scientists predicted a global ice age would happen in a few decades back in the 1970s. This is a half-truth. The REAL case is that back in the 70s they were following a global cooling trend that was occurring. However, there were far too many incomplete datasets back then, so some thought the trend might continue. Not to ice age levels though. Chrighton's ridiculous amounts of browbeating in this has made some chunks of the general public see it as truth.

In conclusion: Jurassic Park was an awesome book, but Crighton is not a scientist.

Crichton is nothing but a hack and a fool. Other authors came up with his Jurassic park concept years before he cashed in on it. Spielberg's version was dopey too.

I like Andromeda strain better, but even that was very low quality… The film was fantastic, but the story is lame.

so as some of you may know. i'm getting a divorce maybe….for a year or so my wife has been on and off the fence on what to do….but never ever solid on the decision…i love her, and i would love for us to stay together, and that is my rock solid decision. and i realize she's her own person with her own decisions to make…. however, tonight, i was just so fed up with not having any idea what's going on, and living my marriage week to week. that basically i told her to “sh*t or get off the pot”…not in those words, i dont think she'd get the refrence… but she just turned around and said….no….i'm gonna take my time… and…i'm….feeling, feelings….i'm not angry….i'm just….turmoiled…yes, i just put that into incorrect spelling…

I love those Tagalog action movies from the 70s to early 90s.

I like the themes that usually center around gangsters, cops, and military-government corruption and conspiracy.

And the main protagonist is always this lone wolf, no-nonsense badass kind of guy who doesnt take any shit and likes to make smartass and funny comments. And manage to get a beautiful woman (or women) to fall for him. He is usually an ex-cop, ex-gangster, ex-marine, or simply somebody with an unexplained skill for using guns and street fighting.

Also there is always a scene in a bar or restaurant where the main hero (or his girlfriend or his best friend) gets dicked around, then its ALWAYS followed with a bar fight.

Then there's the part in the end of the movie where the main hero and main villain exchange insults while in the middle of a gunbattle. Then sometimes the guns run out of bullets then they start using their fists. If the hero gets wounded its always in the shoulder or in the leg or any non-fatal part of the body.

And for some reason, if the hero is gonna die, he can absorb 50 bullets from an M-16 rifle (a favorite weapon in those movies) and still manage to kill at least 5 of the goons with one or 2 bullets each goon.

lol! Thats some good cliches. Put them in your comics. lol

Poser comics suck.

Seriously, this overaliased, poorly modelled, poorly posed bullshit needs to STOP. I've encountered god knows how many of these monstrosities on drunkduck and have to wonder, “at what point did these people start thinking original art was a bad idea?” I have nothing against using 3D in webcomics, I'm dabbling with the idea myself, but these people are just taking models and clothes they get online and using them for their comics. They are, for all intents and purposes, making sprite comics.

Seriously, learn to draw.

And learn to write, since your comics usually read like cheap porn.

Everybody has some genre they hate, for me it's fat comics, for quite a few on DD it's sprite, for yaoi fangirls it's het, for people into indie it's manga etc.

Those are generalizations- but all the genres i listed have a nice fan following on their own. the only point in bashing them is lulz.

I hate comics that go on page after page after page with nothing really happening. Dont get me wrong though. I'm not easily bored. I have high tolerance for boredom and can tolerate reading up to 50 pages of bullshit.

Comics with no tension (in a form of action, drama, comedy, sex, or ideas that stimulate the mind) whatsoever. That is boring.

It doesnt matter if its a well drawn comic or a sprite comic. If it bores me I dont like it. lol!

The Qwest phone company seems to have two departments, One for idiots and one of people who can actually do things right.
I called to cancel my old phone and establish new service at my new home.
First time I call, I get forwarded to the wrong department. Once routed to the new services department, the ditsy woman who took my order for new services seemed sloppy and haphazard in her processes. She assured me my phone would be ready on Thursday.
I was not able up pack the phone till Sunday, and found I didn't have service, that I should have had on Thursday.
I called on Monday, the rep of the day said there was a hold on the account but she would fix it and start service by 8am the next day.
The next day, of course, no service. I called the phone company. The rep of the day said that order had been canceled and there were no notes as to why. I have to go through the process again, and get a new number that was NOT as cool as the old new number. This time the rep seemed to be following the script and was very careful to explain all charges and give me confirmation numbers. Given how competent the last rep was, I can now see how incompetent the previous reps were.
I had already put my old new number on my checks and changed all my contacts to the new number. Now I have to change all my contact phone numbers again.

Now, I reserve the rant to rant further if I don't have phone service tomorrow as promised.
