I agree that DD is still a bit better. Provided the community bounces back from this. Right now it's a LOT more vacant here than usual in the forums.

How about those that want the forums to bounce back make a concerted effort to breath some life back into it? It's not so easy when people aren't posting but the more activity there is the more newbies are likely to get involved.
With the new site looming it's more likely that we'll have to wait for it to be implemented and see how good/bad it is really going to be. The Duck is going to have to build back it's user's confidence before most people will go out of their way to make it active again.

And how long ago was the site hack? IMO you can't fully condemn a person for something they did ages ago when they were a lot younger. When I was an admin of MugenFightersGuild I did some shady things to the opposition as well. It felt justified in my mind. They had done similar things. And the environment was a LOT different than here. Mostly kids trying to get noticed. It's easy to get caught up in it when you are younger.

Once you are in that environment a while you start to see how silly it is as you grow up. Not saying that's exactly what happened with Kyo and that he DID grow up. I have no idea. But I've seen it happen to several people. And classify myself as an example of it.

And “testing security” is a lie. The stuff that he was trying to do on the site was really pretty f-ing bad. If there had have been credit card numbers you can be sure he'd have tried to get ‘em.
I’ll leave it at that.
Interesting that you're coming out with that- Has he actually tried to justify that behaviour? o_O

Sorry, I forgot this was St. Spurious's Day, where we all exchange playful character assasinations and imply criminal intent before leaving it at that!

Actually I never said “testing security” so you're misquoting me there. I said he was pointing up security issues, which is true, but doing it to take the piss - because he was bored on his school hols. I see what you're trying to do there though and no doubt it will have the desired effect…

OnlyFoolsAndVikings
If that's the case, it sounds like he was covering his tracks by saying he was testing security…

…and there y'go - straight in the back of the net!

The only thing he's ever said on the subject is that he was young and foolish at the time. (oh - and he made up for the millions he failed to scam from DD by supplying Obama with a convincing birth certificate for no small renumeration!).

Let's not fall out over this though - I'll stick with my “script kiddie” and you stick with the coding impressario who thinks we're all trying to destroy The Duck with our malicious custom comic layouts! *twitch*

Why can't people just have a good natured debate about a subject without resorting to yelling and carrying on as hilarious as it is to watch sometimes?
Look in the D&D thread. There are a ot of debates that enedd up amicably :)

His motivation was was vandalisation and destruction, with quite a lot of self aggrandizement thrown in. I remember that he was trying to show off to his little gang on Smack Jeeves and they actually had much more community disruption over there because of it. One of their admins ended up quitting over her disgust at the affair.

Has he changed? I'd doubt it. I image he's still inordinately proud of everything he does, still feels he's right to do what he wants regardless of the consequences and other people- any info or details he's collected he will regard as “his” to do with as he likes.
But I'd also imagine that he doesn't want to do anything to jeopardise the site he's built up, and he'd be quite conscientious in maintaining and building it.

There is no way in hell I'd compare him to Volte6 though, not even in the early days. Volte6 was a trail-blazer, innovator and originator.

Scarf, I'm not assassinating anyone's character, that's not my intent. I'm only relating the direct impression we got from what he did- I didn't even know it was the same person till you confirmed it. I dunno where you got your info, about it but I was there the night he did that and I helped clean up the mess. I'm not trying to hint at anything I just wanted to leave the desciption of his actual activities at that point because I didn't want to get into it all.
I don't dispute that he was most definitely a script kiddie, I was first to use the term if you'll look back :)

I don't want to fall out over anything, but what the boy did was quite malicious, offensive, and extremely thoughtless to all the people's accounts he tried to ruin- and being the old DD stalwart that I am I still feel quite strongly over that sort of thing, so this is why I say what I do. I hope you understand.

Sounds a bit like an anarchic teenager to me. I understand perfectly your position, but I don't recognise the character traits your describing in the Kyo I've known for nearly two years. He's complained more than once about people sucking up to him because he's the site admin - if you were into self aggrandisement I think you'd enjoy that sort of thing. Of course, you need a certain amount of ego to achieve anything.

As for Volte6, he sold up long before I came here so I couldn't possibly compare him to anyone, having never seen the man.

Once you're in a position like that you don't really care about wanting to be in that position any longer, if you get my meaning :)

There's anarchic and then there's actually being mean and wilfully destructive. He wasn't just attacking “Drunk Duck”, he was going after individual user accounts. It wasn't good. If we'd wanted to take it that far, he would probably have been criminally liable, especially the way they look at those things today.

I'm afraid impressions stick, some more than others. and that was a pretty bad impression.

—————————-

Anyway, enough about that old trash, look at this:

That nasty, crude, crappy badge was in one of those Ebay reccomended items emails to me. On the ebay listing they describe it as super high quality, made to the best specs and all that… but look at it!
It looks like that star was modelled after a rough pencil sketch (not even EVEN ^_^) and the text looks like the Armour Piercing font from Blambot (bet they didn't pay for professional use), and they've just whacked it on without arcing it correctly (so it has those weird slants), and the spacing is all off. I wouldn't want that thing on any bike I had.
-I've designed some metal badge things as \part of my job so I know it's not that tricky.
Heh, perhaps the crudeness is part of the reason they're selling them on Ebay…?

perhaps they were going for a retro feel.
They were, but they failed pretty badly there- back when they actually made stuff like that as a matter if course things weren't done roughly done or badly sketched because making stuff out of metal was what they did. And the armour piercing font sort of ruins the attempt completely.

In the old days they either used a simple serif font like Times Roman and all that family or a very thin straight sans-serif font like Avant Garde or Futura. Armour piercing by contrast has weird shapes in it, it's pretty bold and uneven- great for comics, but very shizzy for that sort of thing, especially in a circle. …and all that slanting just shows someone who doesn't know how to set up the font correctly on an arcing path- computer error :)

…Back when stuff like that was really rough was… before industrialisation? maybe the early 1700s? I doubt they're going that retro.

They call their stuff “Royal Enfield” too and yet don't have a crown on anything. They're missing a trick there!

Oh, I was thinking of one of Skreem's old comics, or someone like Skreem…? Can't recall. It was called “Bamfield high” or something. Ugh, can't remember. I'm sure Ironscarf knows it.
It was a very saucy comic with people talking as if they came straight out of a Carry On film. ^_^

I think that was… Bramblesomething Academy, by Louloulou. I accidentally offended him because he took the comic down at one point, saying he was going to redo it, and I said something about hoping how it would be based less on traced photos. :I

I'm gonna stay out of the Kyo thing, but yeah he caused a lot of malicious trouble (not just what he did, but the way he did it) to the point that I wouldn't want anyone's data in his hands even today. Incidents like that don't get forgotten easily in my book.

The guy was FIFTEEN YEARS OLD fer chrissake! Is it really necessary to crucify him on this forum for some stupid crap he pulled when he was FIFTEEN YEARS OLD, just because some DD users are joining his site? The flow of users to ComicFury should be held up as an example to Wowio of why they should stop and think about their stupid crap. After all, they don't have the excuse of being FIFTEEN YEARS OLD!

(Sorry, I would've addressed this to Ozone but he called a halt to the discussion afater dragging this whole issue up and making all kinds of allegations about what Kyo didn't actually do but supposedly would've done given half the chance.)

I don't care if he was 5. It makes no difference.
I don't know why you are constructing this in some anti-Comic Fury Vs anti Wowio way man. The discussion on the hack indecent came up in totally natural conversation because it turned out that this Kyo and that one were the same person.

The further discussion has nothing what so ever to do with DD users going to that site or any other. Just as you have feelings of loyalty towards your friend that are aroused by mention of his name, WE have feelings of anger and wariness aroused by that name because of connection with that incident that we personally experienced.

I really think that it would be better for us all just to drop this now because there's a lot of utterly miss-directed anger here.

Fifteen is old enough to practice good judgement. 15-year-olds can be mature in different ways, and if he's able enough to have actually done the script kiddie things he did, he was able to make a judgement (a poor one, as it turned out) about what he should do with that ability. I'm sorry but I won't accept “being a teenager” as an excuse for damaging actions. What he did was immature, but that has nothing to do with his age at the time and I won't forgive him on that principle.

It doesn't have anything to do with people going over to ComicFury, for me. It's just coincidence that it's run by someone that I'm wary of. If he was running any other site I'd still be wary. I agree that Wowio should take notice of the migration- we've mentioned it to them but I'm not sure how it could be conceptualized into something that Wowio could “do” - other than provide a better site with a better toolset, which they're already working on.

In other news, obviously the migration is delayed- and will be delayed, there is no imminent changeover. Lawrence would like to make an announcement about all the new information (he and some others are trying to build up a more personable, positive relationship with you guys so they aren't seen as “Wowio”). Part of that information will be the revised timeline, as well as some positive announcements and plans that I think people will be happy to hear. Expect that “list of upcoming features” soon too, Kinh is trying to get that done for tomorrow. Those guys get the privilege of bringing you good news this time. :]

I remember what I acted like at 15-17 years old so I can see both sides. I'm not gonna write comicfury off yet though, Kyo seems like a swell enough guy and actually puts new features on the site within hours and not months.

One of my chickies “Bawk”ed!

It was the head honcho bitch chicken, and one thing about her is she is a very noisy eater. Whenever I bring fresh food or some grass I picked in the yard she will make this very self-satisfied chirping noise while eating. It almost sounds like she's going “Mmm-! mm nn nom nom”, i've never heard anything quite like it.

So today I brought them some grass as usual she was chirpy, and all the sudden she went “Mmm-! mm nn–:V BAWK!”. It was pretty funny hehe

Heh… now that's cute. I bet they're a lot better than the meat eating wild chickens that keep running around my house. Yep. Throw a KFC drumstick out there and those chickens are all over it. And they're very ugly compared to farm chickens.

I'm still tempted to raise a hen as a pet. Maybe I'll take up my brother in law's offer… he's got these weird “furry” chickens and he wanted to give me one… O_O
